FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, BIG SPRING

FOR SEPTEMBER 27, 2020

At last Sunday’s Service of Installation for Rev. Allen R. Cross III as Minister of First Presbyterian Church of Big Spring speakers were Elder Mitchell Cross; Kay Kennemur, Clerk of Session FPC Big Spring; Rev. Jim Miles, Pastor Ft. Stockton; Ann Hirt, Elder Ft. Stockton; Rev. Cheryl Homsher, Pastor Grace Midland; Ralph Truszkowski, Elder Grace Midland; Bernadette Coffee, Elder St. Paul San Angelo; and Kay Long, Stated Clerk Tres Rios Presbytery. Rev. Bob Reno, El Paso preached. Special music during the service was provided by Gabe Martinez, organist; Jayden Burciaga, Elijah Flores, Gabe Martinez, trumpet ensemble; Gage Davidson, alto saxophone; and Jayden Burciaga, trumpet. Doug Mays, FPC Fellowship Chair, Patti Horton, and Lucy Odom hosted refreshments in the Parlor and Patio following the service.

The Service Committee reminds members that the hygiene products drive ends this month. Anyone wishing to contribute may bring donations to the church office after Sunday.

Presbyterian Women met Tuesday, September 22, at 2:00 p.m. in the library for the first meeting of the year and Bible study. The study for 2020-2021 is called Into the Light: Finding Hope through Prayers of Lament by P. Lynn Miller.

Wednesday Lectionary Bible Study continues to meet in Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. with physical participants and welcomes those who are staying at home to join by computer on Zoom. The link to join in the Zoom group will be posted on the church website, in Faith Notes, and in the Sunday worship bulletin.

The Thursday Lunch Bunch is meeting in Fellowship Hall at 11:30.

The Session met Thursday, September 24, in Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m.

Young members of the church have been reading the Psalm during Sunday worship. Mia Burch was the reader for two Sundays, and Kendyl Wilson read last week.

The Sunday morning Take Ten fellowship in the parlor between Sunday School and worship has resumed. Lucy Odom hosted last week, and Ellen Austin will be host for this week.

Lectionary passages for the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost are: Psalm 78:12-16; Matthew 21:23-27; Philippians 2:5-13. Rev. Cross has chosen for his sermon topic ”Redefining Power and Authority.” Rev. Allen Cross will lead the worship service. Organist/music director Gabe Martinez leads the music on the organ and piano. The Noisy Offering will be collected during the Children’s Moment this week.
