From Rev. Allen Cross
It isn't easy being green. Just ask Kermit THE Frog who sang about the pros and cons of being green on Sesame Street. At first, Kermit disliked it because there are so many other great colors and green just kind of blends into the scenery. But then again, he thought, there are lots of great things that are green and it's a friendly color besides. So being green isn't so bad after all.
Well, we're going to be green from now until the end of November. Of course our green will be interrupted by monthly doses of white when we celebrate communion, but otherwise we're green.
This time of greenness is Ordinary Time on the liturgical calendar. It's not that it's ordinary. Rather the term comes from the word "ordinal" which means ranked like a number in a series. An ordinary in older times was a book of sequential religious rites used in church (as opposed to a necessary which was an outhouse).
So we are in Ordinary Time which is the sequence of days that do not fall into a particular religious festival like Christmas or Easter. Hope you like being green.
See you in church!
Allen
