Are you one of the cool kids?
Teenage is an awkward time for most people, even people who might not admit it. I went to school with people whose families were wealthier than mine, more socially connected than mine, and had every day experiences that were the stuff of most people's dreams. The cool kids always seem to have the inside scoop and know the social rules and codes. They might put down or simply ignore the thoughts and actions of other kids who are just as bright or interesting, but not part of the right group.
Jesus was not one of the cool kids. Nor was John the Baptist. They probably would not have even fit into many church youth groups where the "right" religious language is spoken. They were like children that other children put down or just ignored. In the long run, teenage chasm between the cool and the uncool kids narrows. Everybody eventually finds space to succeed at the things which they individually excel.
But Jesus thanked God that it was the uncool kids who recognized Him and were vulnerable enough to receive the offer of rest. That is not an offer to take a nap but an invitation to discipleship. Hope comes from trading the yoke of worldliness for the yoke of Christ.
Lectionary scriptures this Sunday are: Psalm 145:8-14; Zechariah 9:9-12; Matthew 11:16-19, 23-30; Romans 7:15-25.
