Let it all hang out for Jesus

In 1967, a rock and roll band called The Hombres recorded a song called Let It All Hang Out and captured the mood of a generation that felt their parents' traditionalism had handcuffed them and stifled their creative independence. They cut loose, dropped out, and turned on and their parents figured the world was going to Hell. Let it all hang out is a phrase that means to relax and follow what pleases you without worrying how other people think of you. You don't have to conform and the opinions of others simply don't count.

It's interesting that Jesus said the same thing thousands of years ago. "You are the salt of the earth, but if your salt goes to waste then it does no one any good." He also said "You are the light of the world but if your light is stowed under a bushel basket then it doesn't help anyone see. So let it all hang out. Be salty and give life flavor. Shine your light and don't worry if people say its too bright or you're shining it in the wrong place."

Our lectionary scriptures for this Sunday are: Psalm 112:1-10; Isaiah 58:1-12; Matthew 5:13-20; 1 Corinthians 2:1-16.

All mid-week events are cancelled this week due to poor weather and potentially icy roads. So stay safe from the elements but, in your own way, let it all hang out for Jesus!

Godspeed,

Allen Cross
