That voice in your head could be God.
Abraham was going about his business. Doing his daily thing. Moses was tending sheep. Young Samuel was sleeping peacefully as a priest apprentice and acolyte. Peter and some others were fishing just as their families had done for generations. But a voice came to all of them. For some it was in the person of Jesus. For Moses it was the incredible burning but unconsumed shrub in the desert. For Abraham it was a voice from out of the air. For Samuel it sounded like his mentor Eli.
God calls ordinary people out of ordinary lives to do extraordinary things. No experience or education or seniority are required.
In all societies there are also people who claim to hear voices calling them to do awful things. Violence. Murder. Destruction. Ethnic cleansing. They often claim to have heard God. Somehow we must discern the voices we hear and discern the validity of the acts toward which those voices are directing us. That's what we'll explore this Sunday.
Our lectionary texts are: Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; 1 Samuel 3:1-10; John 1:43-51; 1 Corinthians 6:12-20.
There will be a brief congregational meeting following worship. See you there.
