Was Rabbit too clever?
Rabbit was always the clever one. Pooh was not. But he had insight and wisdom that cleverer animals might miss.
Does that sound strange? Of course, not being clever is not a particularly good life strategy. Wandering around happy go lucky like Pooh will get your head stuck in a lot of honey jars. But sometimes we overthink and overanalyze and that's a pertinent consideration for when we read the Bible.
Our Reformed tradition tells us to not just read the Bible as if the words on the printed page were the verifiable Word of God. We're supposed to go back to original languages as much as possible. Translations of translations and interpretations of interpretations of scripture may not truly reflect what God has to say to us.
But it's another thing entirely to overanalyze scripture or replace God's voice with our feelings and fears. John Calvin claimed that being Christian requires some brain expanding work. Maybe we have to be a little bit Rabbit and a little bit Pooh at the same time.
The scriptures for this week are:
Psalm 22:25-31; Exodus 19:1-6; Acts 8:26-40; 1 John 3:17-21.
