FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, BIG SPRING
Since the Ash Wednesday Service was canceled because of the loss of power and the frozen water, Rev. Cross led the congregation in a Litany of Penitence during the Confession time in Sunday’s worship. He imposed the ashes on those who chose to receive them.
A musical highlight of the Sunday service was a trumpet quartet playing “Country Pictures” by Vassily Brandt for the offertory. The musicians were Elijah Flores, Valerie Hernandez, Jayden Burciaga, and Ismael Castillo.
During Lent, the daily prayer meditation will highlight a particular word, then a scripture passage with that word will be read, followed by a prayer – a linked three-part meditation.
Also during Lent, the video devotionals will speak directly to Lenten themes and will be following along with ideas from the chapters of Augustine’s Confessions.
Wednesday Lectionary Bible Study meets at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Anyone wishing to join in the study by Zoom can find the link to the meeting in Faith Notes or online on the Calendar on the church website.
The Thursday Lunch Bunch meets in Fellowship Hall at 11:30.
The Session meeting for the month will be Thursday, February 25, at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.
The Discovery Class continues a study by Margaret Feinburg entitled Taste and See: Discovering God Among Butchers, Bakers, ad Fresh Food Makers, a culinary exploration that puts scripture in terms of everyday activities. Vicki Miller is leading Lesson Four “Relishing the Olive and Its Oil.”
The Covenant Class is considering meeting again. If any of the members would like to meet, they are asked to notify the church office.
The Youth Bible Study, which is meeting in the Tent Room, has begun a study “Faith Questions: Being Presbyterian” led by Tom Koger.
The Children’s Class begins lessons about the Season of Lent.
The Sunday morning Take Ten fellowship in the parlor between Sunday School and worship has resumed. Royal Padden is host for this week.
Lectionary passages for the Second Sunday in Lent are: Psalm 22: 19-26; Genesis 17:17, ; Mark 8:31-38. Rev. Allen Cross will lead the worship service. The sermon topic is “Strength in Weakness.” Organist/music director Gabe Martinez leads the music on the organ and piano. Order forms for tulips for Easter will be in the bulletin for Sunday worship.
First Presbyterian Church now has a two iTunes podcasts: The Daily Prayer Podcast and The Sermon Podcast. These podcasts were offline last week, but have been restored. The sermon from last week may be found at www.fpcbigspring.com/Sermons.
