FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, BIG SPRING

Sunday, May 2, 2021

Last Sunday Jayden Burciaga presented a trumpet solo on “Sunlight in the Cathedral” by John Demphsey as the Offertory.

Presbyterian Women met Tuesday, April 27 for a clean-up day, pizza lunch, and Bible study from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This was the last meeting for the group until they resume in the fall.

One of the Presbyterian Women’s two annual offerings giving women a tangible way to celebrate the blessings in their lives is the Birthday Offering. This offering funds up to five projects each year in amounts of $75,000 to $150,000 each. This year the projects chosen are: Garden Gate Ranch, Inc. in Des Moines, IO, to assist in their mission by providing a separate education center for programming, therapeutic services, and vocational rehab;

Memorial Drive Ministries, Inc. in Stone Mountain, GA, to provide a needed roof that leaks onto the floor where sewing, karate, dance, frisbee, basketball and other activities take place;

Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Malawi, to provide funds to build an obstetrics and gynecology-specific operating room next to the existing prenatal and maternity wards.

Wednesday Lectionary Bible Study is now meeting at 5:00, in the church library.

The Thursday Lunch Bunch meets in Fellowship Hall at 11:30. Everyone is invited to bring a lunch and join in the fellowship.

The Discovery Class begins the 8-week DVD study Be Like Jesus authored by Randy Frazee, who was senior minister in partnership with Max Lucado at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio.  He now pastors a church in Kansas City. His premise is that “Christian life is not primarily an intellectual pursuit; nor is it simply about doing good or engaging in spiritual activity; but rather it is about who you are becoming for the sake of others.” Vicki Miller will lead this study.

The Youth Bible Study, which is meeting in the Tent Room, continues to study “Faith Questions: Being Presbyterian” led by Tom Koger.

The Children’s Class will be led by Rev. Cross.

The Sunday morning Take Ten fellowship is in the parlor between Sunday School and worship. Paula Farquhar is host for this week.

Lectionary passages for the Fifth Sunday of Easter are: Psalm 22: 25-31; I John 4:7-21; John 15:1-8.  Rev. Allen Cross will lead the worship service and officiate at Communion. The sermon topic is “True Love.” Organist/music director Gabe Martinez leads the music on the organ and piano and provides the Introit and Offertory

First Presbyterian Church now has an iTunes podcast:  The Sermon Podcast.   The sermon from last week may be found at www.fpcbigspring.com/Sermons.
