Everybody plays the fool....sometimes.
How I remember wanting to dance with one of those Richmond, Virginia debutantes in high school. Lights low in the gym. Rented tuxedos. A band playing Motown hits. But, alas, they only had eyes for the boys from Richmond. The patrician South just works that way.
But still the refrain from the Main Ingredient hit rang in my ears. "Everybody plays the fool sometimes. There's no exception to the rule. It may be factual, may be cruel. I ain't lyin' everybody plays the fool."
This week in the scriptures Jesus challenges the wise Temple establishment and their reaction will contribute to His ultimate conviction and crucifixion. Was He foolish to challenge them that way? Paul told the Corinthians that human wisdom is not nearly as wise as divine foolishness. Some folks still believed that the death of Jesus was a foolish thing and that His life served no purpose. But the foolishness of the cross was an act of love by the God that the world did not recognize in the person of Jesus.
When it comes to love, everybody plays the fool sometimes.
Lectionary scriptures this week are: Psalm 19; Exodus 20:1-17; John 2:13-22; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25.
