What are you looking for?

This is the week after the baptism of Jesus. Some followers of John the Baptist were curious about this Jesus so they followed Jesus to see what he might get up to. Jesus noticed this and asked them: "What are you looking for?"

Really, that's Jesus' first question to all of us. What are we looking for? What are we looking for in life? What are we looking for in human relationships? What are we looking for in the places we pick to live in? What are we looking for when we are confronted with new information? What are we looking for when we are confronted with truthful information about ourselves that we don't want to see?

Sometimes the thing we believe we're looking for is not really what we're looking for. In order to find out anything in our spiritual lives, we have to follow along and see where Jesus will take us rather than demand to be taken some place we have in mind. Are you ready for this journey?

Our lectionary texts this week are: Psalm 40:1-11; Isaiah 49:1-7; John 1:29-42; 1Corinthians 1:1-9.

Thanks to all who helped take down Christmas decorations. The sanctuary has been tidied up and we are moving on through the season of Epiphany. The divinity of Christ is revealed in this season beginning with His baptism and this Sunday through the call of disciples.

Godspeed!
