Who’s a pal of Jesus?
We have now gotten past all the feast and festival days that run from the end of Thanksgiving to Trinity Sunday. We're still in the season of Pentecost which will go on for months and there's a good reason for that. The body of Christ, us, the church, has been sent out by Jesus. Not only sent out but sent out with the Holy Spirit within us, empowering us for the mission ministries to which we're called.
So in the season of Pentecost, the lectionary throws at us many situations described in scripture that challenge our understanding of our call and of our relationship with Christ. This coming Sunday in Matthew's gospel, inquiring minds want to know why Jesus keeps the company that he keeps. They are not the right kind of people. They are not the religious cream of the crop, the tall cotton. Instead, they are the trailer trash upon which the right people look down. The tax collectors and such.
Jesus says: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, just those who are sick." Are we willing to admit we are sick?
All classes are meeting this week. The Guthrie Scholars class is moving to 5pm on Mondays from its previous meeting hour on that day. If that time makes it easier for you to join in, we'd love to have you.
